In January, 2001, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien appointed Senator Dan Hays to the office of the Speaker of the Senate. While holding this office, Senator Hays maintains the traditional responsibilities of a senator, but accepts additional duties and obligations as the Speaker of the Senate.
